English Victorian Walnut Wellington chest. Inside top drawer stamped by maker Toplis & Son | Berners Street, London (circa 1845-1870). A stunning burl tower of drawers that slide well for ample storage. Unique single-lock panel on right side on chest.
This unique chest style was produced following a special request by the Duke of Wellington (hence the namesake) during his timing serving during the The Napoleonic Wars (1803–1815). He wanted a piece that could travel by carriage with him, that could store, but also lock all important documents at one time. The English took to this idea and produced similar cabinets in higher-end finishes to be enjoyed within the home.
